African Great Lakes Inform brings the most critical information on management strategies, programmes, projects, data, maps, and tools into one place for leaders, decision-makers, practitioners and other stakeholders. African Great Lakes Inform does not seek to be a comprehensive database, but rather a platform that integrates and curates the most critical information that is needed to guide decisions in each theme.

African Great Lakes Inform is for scientists, resource practitioners and decision-makers working on the African Great lakes and who want to find and share resources, collaborate, and partner to protect, restore and sustainably use the African Great Lakes.

The University of Nairobi (UoN) and the African Center for Aquatic Research and Education (ACARE) own and administer the site. Although UoN and ACARE manage and administer the site, the scientists, leaders and practitioners in the AGL region drive the content on African Great Lakes Inform. African Great Lakes Inform was developed by The Nature Conservancy, under the guidance of the 2017 African Great Lakes Conference and in collaboration with the Lake Tanganyika Authority Secretariat.

Initial development of the platform was funded through private foundations. Generous funding from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation created the African Great Lakes Conservation Fund that the Conservancy administers and will support management of the site by a grantee from 2018 to 2020.

All initial content under the resources library has been provided by the African Great Lakes Conference or entities working in the African Great Lakes region. Future data, projects, papers, and other information will be provided by the growing network of freshwater experts working on the African Great Lakes. Updates on this process are being developed during 2018-2019. Notable appreciation goes to The Nature Conservancy's Sarah Hagen for her work with conference staff and stakeholders to write and post most of the initial content in 2017.

The first version went online in May 2017 at the African Great Lakes Conference. After the conference, African Great Lakes Inform was refined and updated, resulting in the current version which was launched in January 2018. As of July 2019, The University of Nairobi and the African Center for Aquatic Research and Education now own and manage the site.

African Great Lakes Inform is designed to improve information and resource sharing across six themes. As part of this, we do more than give users access to existing resources. We provide context for how a theme is being addressed (Strategies), detail what people are doing (Investments) and highlight what we’ve accomplished (Results).

African Great Lakes Inform staff have been hard at work determining what content to showcase on the site, and sourcing the information they find most valuable in sharing. As the University of Nairobi and the African Center for Aquatic Research and Education take over the site during 2018-2019, they will be working with key stakeholders to refine and publish additional content.

African Great Lakes Inform currently focuses on seven lakes and their associated river basins and border nations: Lake Albert, Lake Edward, Lake Kivu, Lake Malawi/Niassa/Nyasa, Lake Tanganyika, Lake Turkana and Lake Victoria; Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

On the Search page, you can filter all site content by lake or country. On the Resource page, you can filter resources by lake or country.

AGLI’s purpose is to positively inform policy and management of the African Great Lakes. By joining the AGLI community and sharing content that supports the ongoing work in the Great Lakes or in one of the six site themes, you can contribute to our mission of uniting science, practice and policies in region. You can connect with other experts in the region as well. On the “Who We Are” page, you’ll find a section called “our contributors” with a list of others who have submitted information to AGLI.

Any information submitted should support the ongoing work in one or more of the seven great lakes or  six thematic areas. We’re looking for articles, success stories, projects, best practices, maps, tools,  data, programmes, reports, plans, jobs & training information. Please only submit your work, or work you have permission to post. When submitting published articles, check the copyright requirements of the publisher.

When you add a piece of content, you will be able to save as: draft, or “submit for review”. Save your content as “draft” if you are not ready to submit it for review by one of our site monitors. “Submit for review” if you are ready for the site monitor to review your content. You will receive a notification when you have successfully submitted your content, and then again once the site monitor either publishes your content, or chooses to send it back to you for more information. If for some reason the content is not relevant to the mission of AGLI, the site monitor may choose not to publish your information. You will also be notified in that event.

You will be given the choice to turn off automatic email notifications when you create your profile, or by editing your profile. If you do choose to receive email notifications, they will not be excessive. You will only receive automatic email notifications when you submit content, when your content is approved and published, if your content requires further detail, or if your content is not published to the site. By submitting content to AGLI, other contributors or site monitors may reach out to you by email.

If you need to edit content that has already been submitted for review or published, you should contact the site administrator: https://www.africangreatlakesinform.org/contact-us. They will then return your content to a draft form that you can edit.
